The Rotary Club of Lake Hickory welcomed Ralph Doernberg of OUTright Youth of Catawba Valley, Inc as the speaker for the September 29th club meeting. Club Member Sam Gorham introduced Anthony Starr, the Executive Director of Western Piedmont Council of Government, to the club for the lunch meeting program. Anthony gave a good overview of the many things WPCOG does for our community, and answered questions from several of the club members.

Club member Angela Chapman sponsored the club's newest member, Grant Rembert, and he was inducted into the club during the September 22nd lunch meeting.

Although it may seem hard to believe, women membership in Rotary is relatively new. Tom Trollan shared the history of when and how women first became members of Rotary. He was there in California when the Duarte, California Rotary club in the late 70's invited several women to join. That action set off a series of events which finally in 1989 culminated in the Rotary constitution being modified to allow women to become members. The road to women membership was not without conflict and controversy however, with the original club that had invited women to become members having its official affiliation revoked for several years. Sad to say Rotary could not solve this problem on its own and the issue was taken to court where it was finally ruled that Rotary could not exclude women from membership. Mr. Trollan reminded us of the great vitality, impact and valuable perspective that women have brought to Rotary in the three decades that they have been members.

Alan Jackson and Chris Frye detailed the Footcandle Film Festival coming to Hickory September 25-27. It is really exciting that Hickory should host such an event. Alan and Chris showed trailers of three films in the festival. Get your tickets and support this unique event.

President Jeff Mackie sponsored the club's newest member, Andy Howell, and he was inducted into the club during the August 25th lunch meeting.

District Governor Billi Black, who was in attendance during the meeting for the program, helped with the induction by placing the Rotary pin on Andy.

District Governor Billi Black spoke to the Rotary Club of Lake Hickory during their lunch progam, talking about the many reasons why someone would want to join Rotary.  Billi help solicit volunteers to help support the Rotary Foundation's efforts, and talked about the vision of Rotary for the future.

Dawson Place visited the club and gave a program talking about his experience at RYLA camp (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy).  Not only was Dawson Place entertaining in his description of his RYLA experience, but he wants to start an INTERACT Club!  Dick Garlitz hit a home run with today’s program... thank you for arranging this program!
